![]() ![]() Alphonse is alive because his mind is implanted within a suit of armor. ![]() This show would not exist without the concept of the mind-body distinction. The mind is unified with the body in order to create a complete human being. He implies that the destruction of the body does not necessarily equate to the destruction of the mind. ![]() Descartes argues that the mind and the body exist as two separate entities. The famous philosopher, René Descartes, developed the idea of the mind-body distinction in order to further prove the possibility of an immortal soul. The show seems eerily familiar to war in real life, but issues of morality always arise when dealing with war. Many of those alchemists struggle with justifying their actions in the war. Seven years into the Ishvalan War, State Alchemists were brought in and effectively killed many of the Ishvalan people, even the women and children. The Ishvalan War is caused by general cultural and religious divide between the Ishvalans and the Amestrians which all came to a head when an Amestrian soldier shot an Ishvalan child. In Brotherhood, morality fuels the background conflict. If certain practices exist as parts of specific cultures, do we have the right to step into that space and condemn others for their actions? However, this causes an issue when it comes to issues, such as, genital mutilation or animal abuse. Morality is relative… or maybe it isn’t? Some philosophers believe that morality is relative to the person therefore, we cannot hold others to the same moral standards that we possess. And that’s just one of many philosophical ideas embedded in the action-adventure of Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. The story follows the boys in their journey to acquire a philosopher’s stone, which would bypass the limitations of alchemy and allow Alphonse to get his body back.īrotherhood features many actual alchemic ideas, led by the belief in a philosopher’s stone and the creation of homunculi. Luckily, Edward is at least able to transplant Alphonse’s soul into a suit of armor by giving up his own arm, making them a mangled metal pair. The two boys pay a terrible price for their actions: Edward loses his leg and Alphonse loses his physical body. When their mother passes away, the boys attempt to bring her back to life by performing human transmutation, a forbidden technique in alchemy. The story follows two young alchemists, Edward and Alphonse Elric. Truth is, in short, everything, and maintains the natural order of the Universe without malice or kindness.Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is the second adaptation of the original Fullmetal Alchemist manga, which was written by Hiromu Arakawa. As Truth is a being that is outside Time and Space, the only portrayal audiences are given is through the perspective of the characters, which is the only way they can understand Truth in their reality. The difference with Alphonse was the separation of his body and soul into the Gate of Truth, meaning he had not yet died, allowing Edward to make a second trade.Įxplaining what Truth is and what Truth represents is a complicated matter because the being is simply supposed to be beyond human understanding. This would explain why Truth intercedes when Human Transmutation is attempted - the alchemist is attempting an exchange for the soul from a place they cannot reach. All these understandings of the soul follow the idea that it is not tangible, weighable, physical matter within the perceived Universe and by default, outside the reach of human hands. Christianity explains the soul as a non-physical part of a human, Buddhism believes in a singular consciousness through the idea of a soul, and Islam describes the soul as a metaphorical being and essential self. Souls are generally considered entities outside the third-dimensional reality the real world is in.
